Who is William Weir? Is that Henry Weir's actual first name (i.e. he chooses to use Henry) or more sloppy reporting?

Looking at the reserves, nothing too controversial on the women's side. For the men I would have preferred Simon Mantell over Gleghorne or Condon.

Why doesn't Alan Forsyth get a look in?

I was thinking about this as I was watching GB fail to score goals at the Champions Trophy - not sure why they have left the top scorer in the league behind?

He is William Henry Weir but goes by Henry. He was called William Weir on the FIH World League graphics and it took me a while to figure out he wasn't a twin...

4 years since London 2012 (obvious) and not a single young player has come through the England youth/U21 setup on the mens side..

Rather have Alan forsyth or even Tom Carson upfront instead of Sam Ward, I don't rate Sam Ward internationally. It's pretty much the same squad as the champions trophy? Should have changed things up imo

There are a handful in each squad who should have been eligible for u21 in 2012, did they not come through the U21 setup? (genuine question, it's not something I've paid any attention to, so I haven't a clue.)

    From the Men:
Martin bypassed U21s as was full international at 12 years old
Sloan used to be Irish so wasn't involved in any GB gubbins

Did the rule about number of players change back? I assume so, as both the England sides are 16 players, and the just released aussie side is also 16 with 1 keeper rather than 18 with 2. I should check, but I'm being a lazy keeper. ;)

    I assume that's a typo, and it's meant to say 17/18/19?

I don't think it ever changed from 16.

Interestingly, some of the reserve players seem to be tweeting things such as 'off to Rio', 'proud to be part of the squad' which I don't think has happened before? I thought usually it's devastation they haven't made the final cut.

In terms of involvement in the U21 setup, I think the below have all played U21 (so of those just Condon that has come through since 2012).

    Alastair Brogdon, 28, Hale
    Nicholas Catlin, 27, Marlow
    David Condon, 24, Leicester
    Adam Dixon, 29, Nottingham
    William Weir, 26, Nantwich
    George Pinner, 29, Ipswich

Straight to the senior squad (with some minor U21 involvement):

    Ashley Jackson, 28, Tunbridge Wells
    Harry Martin, 23, Ipswich
    Barry Middleton, 32, Doncaster

    Late bloomers:

    Daniel Fox, 33, Godalming
    Michael Hoare, 30, Liverpool
    Samuel Ward, 25, Leicester

    Irish (!):

    David Ames, 27, Cookstown
    Mark Gleghorne, 31, Antrim
    Iain Lewers, 32, Belfast
    Ian Sloan, 22, Cookstown

This selection caused a bit of a stir up north. Top goal scorer and players player of the year not picked .....

yes, we Scots always hope to see some of our own involved. With Forsyth being top scorer etc you'd have thought he was a shoe in.

Average age of the womens squad is 27,75 and mens almost the same with 27,875.
That looks quite old to me.
The Germans women squad has an average of 25. Mens are not finally announced yet.

The Olympic regs limit squads to 16 + 2 reserves (4.6.a & 4.6.b). This is a requirement of the IOC.

Standard FIH regs still allow for 18 players with 2 GKs, or 16 with 1 GK (see regs 3.4.a & 5.1). Although, the regs now allow for bigger squads at invitational tournaments if agreed by all participants (3.4.b).

Assume 1 of the 3 named reserves will get the chop at the very last minute then?

If I remember correctly, the 2 reserves are full travelling reserves - live in the Olympic village and take a full part in everything apart from match days. They can come into the playing 16 if someone gets crocked.

OK so they're a part of the squad, but they're not really part of the squad - in the eventuality of a medal, they won't get one.

Unless things have changed the reserves are NOT allowed into the athletes village. They can attend training sessions at the Olympic venue with the full team but have to stay offsite.

Obviously hope I am very wrong on this but based on recent form, don't think that either of our teams is going to medal this year

Really interesting that the Dutch have included a young rising star at the expense the likes of Jonker and Galema who have been regulars in recent years, yet Forsyth doesn't make the cut despite being league top scorer for the last 2x seasons and GB lacking anything creative up front. It also says something that Si Mantell goes as reserve despite having not been able to play for 12 months through concussion.

You could be forgiven for thinking that you have to be in the England squad to get selected for GB.

It is also pretty shameful that in 4 years we haven't produced an international standard womens flicker such that we have to coax someone out of retirement to fill the spot 12 months before Rio. The wrong message to send to aspiring players in my opinion.
