Which gear? How should the OBO Legguard fit with the hotpants?

Hallo dear fellow goal keeping lovers,

I am new at this forum and need some advice/help from you guys! The upcoming season I am going to play at a new club at national level. I just started goalkeeping last season (after a 5 years stop where i played ice hockey). I don't have my own gear but i got the opportunity to order whatever I wanted. Last season i played with the OBO robo legguards size L and a cloud pant size M.
Since the level is going to be much higher i need more protection so i ordered size M obo hotpants and still L legguards.
Now i have the feeling they are slightly 'bumming' into each other when stretching my legs. The Robo hotpants feels much more stiffer that the cloud (of course) so now i am wondering how the legguard and hot pant should fit on each other? should it perfectly close the gap? 1 cm in between? open space? Help!

I will make some pictures if needed today. By the way i am 174 cm tall and so just between M and L laggards but have large legs so prefer Large.

Hope you could help/show me how it all should fit!
    Thanx in advance.

Yep.. feels a bit like goalieporn but... IMG_6522.JPG here i have the pictures of how the pants 'connects' with the leg guards. Love to hear your opinions about the fit.

I wear the exact same combination - size L HR legguards and size M hotpants. I just measured the fit: on mine there is an 8cm of open space on the right leg between the bottom of the pants and the top of the outside leg bolster (what looks like about 1 cm on yours) and at the front the top overlaps my shorts by about 5cm.

I am however 190cm tall and so the gap is larger because I have longer legs. Also I like my hotpants to sit nice and high on my thighs so that the groin padding fits tightly against the outside edges of the groin protector and to ensure this I wear braces with my hotpants.

Provided there is no overlap on the side and there is overlap at the front I think you will be fine.

One other thing I do notice is that I seem to do my hotpants up tighter than yours on the thighs, the difference may be that I have skinnier thighs than you or that as the hotpants get broken in they mold to the thighs better.

Thank you for your reply! That helps me a lot. I will let you know how it feels after first practice next week. I dont see another option tho, other than a less protective pant.

Think you could try and get the shorts to sit a little higher on your waist. Other option to try on are the robo bored shorts. Agree they look a bit loose on your thighs, too. I find having knee & quad flexed (e.g. by putting foot up on a chair) when doing up the shorts helps them sit better around thighs.

How far from bottom of shorts to kneecap? And how far from kneecap to top of inside of legguard?

Where is your knee located with respect to the knee-space on the legguards? This is the main indicator if you have the correct size legguards. When between sizes I always advise the smaller as this is better for mobility and you don't get this issue.
If they are the correct size, you could consider cutting away a bit of the inner foam to make room for the shorts.
And as the others have said, wear the shorts as high as possible.

My knee is exactly where it should be in the kneecap of the legguard, i tried M legguards before but they caused me a lot of injuries. I think it is a good idea to tighten them up. I will try them out next week. Other wise the bored shorts are a possibility?
    Thank you!

I got my dear lady wife to take a pic of how I wear them (I am wearing compression shorts under the hotpants):

This is how I think they should be worn:

1 - there should be a gap here

2 - there should be overlap here

3 - wear the hotpants high

4 - pull the velcro tab as far as you can so as to get a snug fit and mold the hotpants to your thighs

5 - knee should sit well inside the bolstered section of the pads

As an aside, the Robo hotpants are the only thing I have ever worn in size M in my adult life. I don't wear the L's because they are too loose around the waist and thighs.

PS: yes my GKing gear lives in the garage because she won't let it in the house

Certainly worth trying. They might sit a bit better, they might sit a bit worse. They're not as adjustable, so some people find they're in between sizes and can't get them to sit how they want.

To my eye, that's a big gap at #1. I think mostly because I'm a cm or so shorter than you but wear the biggest hot pants available, because anything smaller doesn't fit around my waist/thighs. I find I'm most likely to wear one in the lower thigh when I'm lunging sideways, and in that situation the overlap at #2 doesn't help. Don't think there's anything wrong with either method, it's just a tradeoff between mobility and protection, and I'd be willing to have that same gap if they made large circumference/medium length shorts.

I am so glad someone posted this question. I also have questions about the goalie pants and how far they should sit. I am 163 cm, wearing Obo Hi-rebound leg guards size M and TK S1 Safety pants size M. At first the pants were getting in the way of the inner foam of the leg guards, so I made my pants shorter by sewing up the part near the groin. Now they sit right on top of the inner foam like Janne's photo. My problem is I keep getting hit at the gap right above the knee cap when I bend my legs for some shots. That's the two inch space that is exposed in Janne's third photo.

I got hit during penalty shots training on the left thigh, then got hit on the right thigh while stopping a penalty stroke at a game the next day. Now I have two matching big bruises. Am I doing something wrong with the way I stop shots, or are my goalie pants not long enough?

Sounds like a combination of technique/bad luck.

Where were the shots that hit you? More or less straight at body, or were you having to lunge quite wide, or something else?

I agree its a big gap so when I played on Saturday I measured the gap after the game: only about 3m instead of the 8cm when I measured them after specially putting them on to measure, so I think they slip down naturally during play. Either way its not a big issue to me as I don't recall ever being hit in that gap and I like
having the pants nice and high and tightly fitting.

I suspect I have the reverse problem to you: because I have a relatively slender waist and thighs for my height I have to wear M because the L is too big in those dimensions, even though the hotpants maybe end up shorter than would be ideal.

Try some medium leg-guards. No less protection but a far better fit for your height.

I was lunging and exposed that gap just above the knee...and the ball found the gap like GPS:(

Yeah, part bad luck, part you've lunged to not quite the right spot then.

Might be that ball was higher than you thought, or not quite line you thought, so you've just lunged as wide as possible and got unlucky. Might be that you're opening hips up too much, lunging and putting foot square, or even a tiny bit behind square, which can leave more thigh exposed.

    Hi all,
I have been playing with the combi since the beginning of August and everything is fine! The fit is right even after a 4 hour practice. Thanks for all the feedback!
@simpo; I have that problem sometimes too, and ouch it hurts. I normally get these bruises at the end of a practice, when tired. Another situation could be you were expecting the ball getting hit on your feet but it was 'tipped' in just before it would hit you... i can feel the pain.

Yes I see that gap above your knee in your profile pic too, Janne. I wonder if the "Obo Knees Up" would help protect that gap or hinder movement.

I am now playing in different gear than my profile picture shows ;-) But I am not bothered with the gap! I guess that knees up will only hinder movement, i can not afford to make a mistake due to that hinder.
