I remember playing at Biscay on an Astro with pop up sprinklers. I can only assume it was something to do with county games so must have been 74 or 75

I believe it was sometime in the mid-80s but I can't remember where. It may have been at one of the universities or the Olympic park field. I do remember the last game I played on natural grass in 1994.

Fondly remember playing on derby county cricket outfield. Perfect grass, flat, honest and forgiving

    - @1987 away @ Whitgift school but most memorable was playing on the "apparently" only Astro in South Africa at the time (Early 90's) Randburg at altitude. Starting to hyperventilate, just thinking back!

Millfield School in about 1987 or 1988 - our comprehensive created a team under the French and TD teachers, and we played on the red gra pitch. One day, we went to Millfield to play on their astro.

Just a little different to gravel...

My Uni had a shale (sp) pitch.

I thought our sand based pitch was bad when you fell over, this was atrocious. Especially in the cold.

I am so glad the special characteristics of Silksworth are properly being represented here...I've not played there for 20 years but met somebody at a work function recently who couldn't believe I knew where Silksworth was...once she got over the shock, she told me how cold it was :)

And full marks for the Torbay car park making a mention in a first astro experience thread! If I'd had more than about 3 hours sleep, I might have asked myself what I was doing playing on that 'surface' during the festival...

Back in the big sand pit.
our Uni Shale pitches flooded as soon as there was a bit of light drizzle. apparently they installed the drainage the wrong way.
they now have water based astros!
